We Cleaned 500 Tonnes of Silica Sand—And Dropped Iron Oxide from 0.8% to 0.2% A glass manufacturer in Malaysia was struggling with off-spec silica sand. Their finished glass kept coming out with a greenish tint—too much iron oxide. They tried magnetic separation, but it didn't catch everything. We brought in our spiral silica sand washing machine. The combination of water scrubbing, spiral agitation, and gravity separation removed clay, silt, and stubborn iron-bearing particles in a single pass. The first 500-tonne batch tested at 0.2% Fe₂O₃—well below the 0.5% threshold for clear glass production. They've been running the washer for two years now, and we've only replaced the lower spiral wear shoes once. A 2021 study from the Industrial Minerals Association noted that spiral washers are particularly effective at removing fine clay coatings that dry screens miss. Our experience backs that up.
